Keeping the wildlife out and the landscaping in

For those of you who live the more rural areas of Puget Sound, you know our area is a haven for a wide variety of wildlife. In the Olympia area, neighborhoods like Cooper Point are teeming with all sorts of furry friends, from little critters like squirrels, chipmunks and moles, to bigger creatures including coyotes, linx, bobcats, wolves and deer.

While the wildlife can be serene and beautiful, when you have a beautiful, green lawn, fruit trees and gardens, your yard is a literal smorgasbord waiting to be eaten. The best solution in these cases is to install a deer fence to keep the wildlife out, protecting your investment.

The project below, in the Cooper Point area, was just such a situation. While the neighborhood is well developed, residents have worked hard to keep the envioronment natural and wooded. But this also makes the area a prime location for all sorts of wild animals, especially deer. For this homeowner, we built a perimeter deer fence. Deer fences require less wood than a fully wood fence, which translates into lower cost for materials. Aesthetically, it affords a better view both inside and outside the property, while still providing a barrier. In this particular case, we built the front part of the fence behind existing foliage, providing partial privacy. At the entrance to the fence, we added wood gates as a screen to hide outdoor items like the garbage and recycling cans.

In addition to the fence project, we built a small retaining wall to separate the landscaping around the house from the front yard, leaving the owners with a beautiful, flat lawn.
