Low Maintenance and Modern Vinyl Fencing

If you're looking for a modern, maintenance-free fence, vinyl fencing is something to consider. Vinyl fences are a great option in our climate because they are impervious to cool, wet winters and hot, sunny summers.

Here's an example of a vinyl fence installation project we finished last fall in the Dupont area. Take a look through the photo gallery below to see the installation process.

As you can see, installation is not much different than a traditional, wood fence. The main differences in the installation process, at least on the products we use, are that the boards interlock with a tongue and groove system, and the boards lock into a base frame. This combination means only minimal fasteners are required.

From our perspective, vinyl fences have some installation advantages. Because all of the components are manufactured on a production line, every board and framing component is unifrom, perfectly straight, and interchangeable. With a wood fence, we spend a lot of time inspecting boards for quality and uniformity. We also like working with vinyl fencing because it's light and easy to transport.

From a homeowner's perspective, the biggest plus of a vinyl fence is it's virtually maintenance free. Wood, by nature, is porous and absorbs mositure and dirt, which is why it needs regular staining or painting. Vinyl, on the other hand, is waterproof and requires no treatments.  If a vinyl fence gets dirty, you simply spray it off with a hose. In a worst case scenario, stubborn dirt can be removed with sponge and a mild detergent.

Some people also prefer the modern, uniform look of vinyl: because a properly installed vinyl fence consists of manufactured boards, the end product will always be consistent. We do stress, however, that hiring a professional fence installer with vinyl fencing experience is key to achieve good results. A poorly installed vinyl fence looks even worse than a poorly installed wood fence.

Vinyl fence boards also do not warp or crack like wood, so over time, you can expect a vinyl fence to maintain its cosmetic and structural integrity. While it is not impervious to weathering and wear, you can expect a vinyl fence to hold up well for many years. Again, professional, experienced installation is important, as well as choosing a good quality brand of vinyl fence.

The downside to vinyl fencing is you are limited in the number of colors available, and once you choose a color, you're stuck with it for the life of the fence. With wood, there are an infinite number of paint colors and stains, and to some extent you can change their color later if you change the color of your house or your personal tastes change. Not so with vinyl.

Vinyl fences are also more expensive than wood. You can expect to pay at least 50% more for vinyl. However, keep in mind that vinyl fences come with a manufacturer's warranty, and generally do last longer than wood fences, plus you won't have any long-term maintenance costs for painting or staining.

While vinyl fencing is not for everyone it's definitely something to consider. AJB Services is happy to provide you with a free quote for professional vinyl fence installation, and we can also provide you with a comparative bid to a wood fence.
